Since 11 March, 24 professionals Fisheries Development Institute (FIFG) aboard the research vessel (B / C) Abate Molina sailed to start a campaign that will quantify the biomass of mackerel.
The scientific team left the port of Valparaiso (Valparaíso Region) and will operate between the regions of Arica and Parinacota, and Coquimbo.
Specifically, between Arica (18˚25'LS) and the island Chañaral (29˚15'LS) and from 1 to 100 miles offshore.
According to the FIFG, the researchers used the hydroacoustic method to quantify the biomass of pelagic resource.
The Project Manager is Jose Cordova, fishing Engineer; and the captain of the boat is Ivan Giakoni.
This new research cruise will last for 39 days.
The FIFG explained that the specific objectives of the project are:
-Estimar Abundance and biomass of mackerel;
-The Composition of height, weight, age and sex ratio of the stock of mackerel in the area and study period;
-To Determine the composition of major food items of mackerel;
Define the spatial and bathymetric situation mackerel and distribution of zooplankton;
-Specify Bycatch and their relative importance in sets of identification.
'As the cruise ends, a document of progress include the preliminary results of the estimated biomass of mackerel and your letter of distribution in the study area will be delivered.
After five days of intense negotiations among member countries and aid for the Third Committee of the Regional Fisheries Organisation South Pacific (RFMOs-PS) held in February in Auckland (New Zealand), Chile managed to obtain 297,000 tonnes for the extraction delJjurel both in their territorial waters and offshore during 2015.
This assignment means 7,000 tonnes for the year 2014.
In distribution, Chile was followed by China, which received 29,200 tons, and the European Union, which was left with 28,100 tons.
With these figures, Chile reaffirmed its dominant share of the mackerel resource and extractive activity for the industrial, craft and processing with stability for the rest of the year is projected Sector.
