Climate Change Fisheries and Aquaculture in Chile

A number of key findings have been documented by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in the AR5, which will be crucial in the formulation of public policy in the years ahead.

The changes occurring in the physical, chemical and biological state of the oceans have a direct impact on fisheries and aquaculture production, and increases the vulnerability of this sector to the stressors of non-climate change, such as pollution and fisheries

Rising sea temperatures and ocean acidification are the main threats to coral reefs, whose degradation can impact on fisheries production in the tropics.

It is inevitable that a certain level of impact due to the effect of greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere occurs.

The adaptation to some climate impacts may be possible in the short term, through the implementation of policies and risk management and monitoring systems use better.

Mitigation options are limited, but policies to reduce the use of fossil fuels through economies affect the seafood industry. The measures that promote conservation of mangroves, sea grasses and wetlands help keep CO2 sequestration by the oceans and build resilience to the impacts of climate change.
