Anchovy biomass is recovered in the south

The Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) informed that anchovy biomass in the south shows a significant recovery, according to a recent cruise evaluation performed between 15 and 27 January.

He explained that the biomass found amounted to 607,000 tons, higher than that found in the cruise of 15 October 2014 (244.329 tons).

“During the evaluation we observed a trend towards normalization of environmental conditions, making the South Biomass stock Anchovy experience a significant recovery”, said in a statement.

The evaluated area was between Atico and Ilo, from 0.5 to 50 nautical miles from the coast.

IMARPE reported that found stock is made by 98% for juveniles. “The few adults found correspond to a mature stage no spawning”, He said.

The juveniles are very close to reaching the minimum size of fish (12 cm), a process known as “recruitment”This situation could occur in a few months.

“If environmental conditions continue its trend towards normalization and individuals remain in the southern region of the Peruvian Sea, Biomass experience a significant increase, which will mean a successful recruitment”He declared.

Because the stock in the south of the country consists mostly of juveniles, IMARPE recommended to the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) kept closed extractive activities in this region until the adult stock availability is adequate.

This situation should be monitored and verified by the Cruise Hydroacoustic Assessment of Pelagic Resources to be held in March this year.
