Authorities have five years to save the oceans

The world's oceans are threatened by pollution and overfishing. An independent commission composed of former senior government officials and businessmen warned that action was needed within five years.
The World Ocean Commission, created in February 2013, said that reducing the use of plastic objects and deep sea fishing and implementation of stringent for exploration of oil and gas regulations are key to the bailout .

“The ocean provides 50% of our oxygen and fixed 25% of global carbon emissions.

Our food chain starts in the 70% of the planet”Said José María Figueres, former President of Costa Rica, who co-chairs the committee.
The team presents eight proposals to restore and preserve the health of the oceans in a report entitled “Decline to recovery: A plan of salvation for the world's oceans”.

These urges limiting government subsidies go fishing offshore to kill them in five years. This applies mainly to the United States, European Union, China and Japan.
“About 60% of these subsidies encourage unsustainable practices without them fishing offshore industry would not be financially viable”Says the report.

The offshore waters are those that go beyond the boundaries of countries and constitute about 64% of the total surface of the oceans, and half of all biological productivity of these adds.
The commission said the lack of jurisdiction over these waters is a major problem and called the negotiation of a new agreement under the terms of the Convention of the Law of the Sea United Nations (UNCLOS).

“The sea belongs to everyone. We know what to do but we can not do it alone. A joint mission must be our priority”Said David Miliband, Britain's former Minister of Foreign Affairs and co-chair of the committee.
