The member countries of the FAO today approved a series of broad guidelines that will drive the vital role of artisanal fishermen in contributing to global food security, nutrition and poverty eradication.
The FAO guidelines are designed to support millions of artisanal fishermen in the world, particularly in developing countries.
For FAO, Artisanal Fisheries represents over 90% of world capture fisheries and fishing industry workers. It also represents a valuable source of animal protein for billions of people around the world.
The fishermen and fish workers face a number of challenges, from unsafe and unhealthy working conditions and lack of infrastructure to pollution, environmental degradation, climate change and disasters that threaten the resources that depend for their livelihood.
The Voluntary Guidelines adopted today are therefore comprehensive, ranging from measures to improve governance systems of Fisheries and working conditions to reduce losses and post-harvest food waste.
“These guidelines represent a huge advance. They are an important tool to promote the implementation of national policies to help artisanal fishermen to prosper, to play an even more important role to ensure food security, promoting good nutrition and poverty eradication, "said the Director-General of FAO Jose Graziano da Silva.
